Moscow has decided to escalate the conflict with NATO and its partners by recognizing the independence of Donetsk and Luhansk from Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, on Monday, acknowledged of the independence of the breakaway republics of Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine.
This comes on the heels of what the United States and Western countries described as Russia’s intention to invade Ukraine and block the way for Ukraine to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that Russia’s recognition of the independence of Donetsk and Luhansk is a violation of Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
In its first reaction, the European Union promised a firm response against Moscow.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said this recognition was a breach of international law and Ukraine’s sovereignty.
