Perthes says UN supports civilian rule in Sudan

The representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Sudan, Volker Perthes, sent a message of reassurance to the Sudanese people that they are not alone in their plight to restore civilian rule.

Perthes, head of UNITAMS, affirmed the unequivocal commitment of the United Nations to support the establishment of democratic civilian rule in Sudan.

End of last year, the United Nations launched consultations to restore the political process to what it was before the coup of October 25 o last year, which helped destabilize the country.

In a tweet Perthes stated that Sudanese people “will not walk this path alone”.

The country entered into political, economic and security crises, brought about by the military’s forceful seizure of power on October 25, 2021.

On Monday, the mission published a summary of its report on the consultations it held with several Sudanese parties.

The revolutionary forces and the resistance committees rejected Perthes’ moves, and described them as attempts to legitimize the existing authority.

The leader of the coup, Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan, had also complained about the United Nations mission and its president.

He said that Perthes has no right to put forward any initiatives, and that he should limit his role to mediation between the Sudanese parties.
