The Western delegation, at the conclusion of its visit to Khartoum, which began Thursday, welcomed the recent release of some of the political detainees, while also urging Sudanese military leaders to release all remaining detainees.
The delegation included all of French Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, German Director for East Africa and the Horn of Africa, Norwegian Director-General for Regional Affairs, UK Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Africa and Sudan and South Sudan, and the European Union’s Special Representative for the Horn of Africa.
In a press release on Friday, Western officials called on Sudan to end violence, including sexual and gender-based violence, against protesters and ensure accountability for those responsible for those crimes, and for the state of emergency to be lifted immediately.
They stressed that freedoms of expression, peaceful assembly, and association must be fully respected for the process initiated by UNITAMS, the African Union and IGAD to succeed.
The European delegates expressed their grave concern about the reinstatement of members of the former regime again, has exacerbated tensions in Sudanese society and made it more difficult to implement reforms.
The delegation also expressed its concern over the rapid deterioration of the Sudanese economy and the enormous challenges faced by the Sudanese people as a result.
They pledged to continue humanitarian and other forms of direct assistance to the Sudanese people during this difficult time, and emphasized that international financial support for the Sudanese government, including debt relief, can only be achieved by establishing a credible civilian government.
