On the 3rd of May,  police in South Sudan arrested a 42 year old Sudanese merchant, along with two “accomplices”, for alleged charges of rape and murder.

The court in Bahr Ghazal state in South Sudan had wrapped up the case’s preliminary hearing, where it listened to 7 witness testimonies, including those of the mother and the sister, in the case of the rape and murder of the underage victim.

The victim’s mother, talking to Radio Tamazuj, said that she has presented evidence and information regarding the case and that she has “demanded the death penalty be used as punishment.”

“At the end of my testimony I demanded the defendant be hanged to death here in Aweil,” she said.

The plaintiff’s attorney, Santino Deng, said that the 7 witnesses provided the required information before the court, all stating that the primary suspect was indeed guilty in the crime of rape and murder of the girl, Lual.

“The court heard from the victim’s mother and her disabled sister, the main witnesses in the case, and we presented evidence proving the involvement of the accused in the crime.”

The defense lawyer for the accused, Isaac Atyan, said that “nothing can be proved right now” from the witnesses’ statements, indicating that “the information recorded with the court will determine the real evidence.”
