The head of the UN mission to assist the transition in Sudan welcomed the training of 1,700 soldiers from the armed signatories to the Juba Peace Agreement, to be integrated into the joint security force.
The UN official stressed that there is an urgent need for the complete implementation of the provisions of the Juba Peace Agreement, including security arrangements, and the rapid deployment of the joint security force to ensure the protection of civilians.
He also stressed the need to establish relevant commissions such as the Refugee and Displaced Persons Commission, the Transitional Justice Commission, the Lands Commission, and other provisions related to power and wealth sharing and reparations.
“This agreement was drafted by the Sudanese and signed by Sudanese parties. Only they can implement it and bring peace to the country. I urge the signatory parties to renew their efforts to this end.”
Perthes called on the Sudan Liberation Army Movement – Abdel Wahid al-Nur, and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement – North – Abdelaziz El-Hilu’s wing- to join the peace process in order to achieve comprehensive, sustainable peace for all of Sudan.
