Brazilian and world football legend Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known as Pele, died at the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein in São Paulo. He was 82.
The hospital confirmed that Pele had died of multiple organ failures brought about by his battle with colon cancer.
A few weeks ago, during the Qatar 2022 World Cup, Pele had been hospitalized and moved from his treatment plan to “end of life care.”
The former Brazilian Minister of Sports tweeted a day later that he was fine and his treatment had been going well.
Pele played for the Brazilian national team, winning three World Cups, and six Brazilian league titles with Santos, the club he spent most of time at.
Brazil announced three days of national mourning following the football icon’s death.
