The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) on Tuesday engaged in what was described as the fiercest fighting in months with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in al-Fitaihab neighbourhood of Omdurman, north of Khartoum, forcing them to retreat from many strategic locations.

The SAF has set free three officers held captives by the RSF since eruption of war, nearly two years ago, and killing 20 rebels, SAF Spokesman Brig General Nabeel Abdalla said.

Since the first days of war, the RSF detained thousands of army and other troops officers in buildings inside the capital’s three cities.

SAF’s individuals released videos documenting the controll of the service station in al-Fitaihab’s Block 17.

Al-Fitaihab area has been the scene of many clashes between the SAF and RSF where SAF’s Engineering Corps situated on the northern part of the area while the RSF’s main military camp in Khartoum State lies in the southern part of the area.

Last February, SAF troops from Karari base in far northern part of Omdurman managed to join the Engineering Corps troops enabling the army to make advances in Ombada area to the west and Abu Saad and al-Salha areas to the south.
