Sudan’s geological body warns of tectonic activity near dams

The Sudan’s Geological Research Authority revealed that seismic monitoring has shown tectonic activity in the area surrounding the Rosaires Dam in Sudan and the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), contrary to previous forecasts.

The Sudan Geological Research Authority revealed that seismic monitoring has detected tectonic activities in the area surrounding the Rosaires Dam in Sudan and the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), contrary to previous forecasts.

The Authority predicted, in a statement quoted by the Sudan News Agency on Friday, that tectonic activity in the GERD, approximately 100 km from Rosaires Dam, and Rosaires Dam region could have significant implications in the area if moderate to strong earthquakes occurred, given the numerous earthquakes recorded in the lake during the monitoring period.

The Authority said an earthquake with unspecified magnitude occurred near Rosaires Dam on Tuesday night.

Residents of Rosaires and Damazin cities in Blue Nile region reported feeling the tremor, the Authority said.

The Authority attributed seismic activity in Rosaires Lake to Induced Reservoir Seismicity (IRC), where artificial lakes alter tectonic environments and rifts systems.

Concerns arise regarding GERD’s potential damage, with its massive 1,800 km-long and 74 billion cubic meter reservoir.

The East African Rift System, the largest seismically active rift system on Earth, passes 500 km east of Addis Ababa and over 1,000 km east of GERD.

The Authority indicated that the Rapid Support Forces, which is at war with the Sudanese army since April 2023, has destroyed Khartoum’s earthquake monitoring center and looted several monitoring stations nationwide.
