One in three Sudanese children are facing acute malnutrition – above the 20 percent threshold for a famine confirmation, said the World Food Programme (WFP) on Sunday.

The United Nations’ agency warned that a protracted famine is taking hold – the only place in the world at this level of hunger – and without humanitarian assistance, hundreds of thousands could die.

A total of 24.6 million people (around half the population) are acutely food insecure, while 638,000 (the highest anywhere in the world) face catastrophic levels of hunger, the WFP said.

The crisis has been triggered by the ongoing war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces which is destroying livelihoods, infrastructure, trade routes and supply chains.

The WFP and partners urged the international community to “prioritize funding for humanitarian efforts and to use diplomatic channels to secure a ceasefire and unrestricted access.”

The agency said it needs US$510 million for operations across Sudan up to May 2025.
